Distressed Antique Gilding

A great example of beautifully aged and distressed gilding, seen on this continental fluted second Empire frame.

Pair of Fluted Frames

A good, pair of fluted second Empire frames that have a nicely distressed antique original gilded finish, they just need some repairs to make them complete.

Fluted Empire Frames

Here are two great examples of fluted second Empire frames, both have a really deep hollow shape. The gilding on the top frame is heavily distressed, which shows the blue/gray bole clay that is beneath the gold leaf.

Examples of three French picture frames. Top is a 19th C Barbizon frame, middle a 19th C second Empire fluted neoclassical frame, and bottom is a mid 20th C Parisian frame known as a Montparnasse style. All of these are part of my new stock, and once catalogued they will be for sale.

Gilded Empire frame

Overpainted Empire Frame

This antique frame is a distinct style from the early 19th Century, related to the Empire style which originated in Napoleonic France. The frame has composition ornament Greek scrolling corners featuring the caduceus from Greek mythology, and a deep scotia shape. I believe this particular design came after the Empire period during the time known as the Bourbon Restoration, (the period marking the two occasions when Napoleon lost the throne). The general Empire style was also adopted in German and was known as the Biedermeier style. 

This frame has clearly been over-painted, this will be removed and the frame will be restored to an original condition.

Fluted cove frame

This is a nice little antique fluted cove frame that has had a few minor repairs.

Continental style

This lovely antique 19th Century frame landed in the workshop today, a good example of a composition frame; to my eye anyway it's a lovely example. Nice flat panel with incised designs and Continental Empire style palmette repeating pattern on the main convex section of the moulding, the outer high point is a triple reed with cross ribbons and the corners are finished with some bold leaves.
