This round aperture Victorian Louis XV Rococo revival frame came in recently for some restoration work.

Thursday

Early 19th C Frame

This early 19th Century Regency frame had numerous losses to the composition ornament, and was also very dirty.

Nice Little Compo Frame

Friday

Antique Watercolour Frame

A simple but really nice little antique watercolour frame with original gilding and composition ornament. I love the colour of bole on antique frames, this dusty pink is a classic.

Thursday

Big Swept Frame

A very ornate, 9" wide antique swept frame from the 19th Century.

Side Ornament

Ornament seen on the sides of various antique frames.

Wednesday

Antique 20" x 24" Frames

A varied selection of antique frames to fit 20" x 24" paintings, prices vary from £80 to £450 ex VAT.

Sunday

Pre-Raphaelite Frame

Another example of a 19th Century Pre-Raphaelite style frame, this one made from composition with a bold relief pattern.

Saturday

Restored Watercolour Frame

This 19th Century watercolour frame has just been repaired and restored. It had numerous losses to the ornament, and had been overpainted, it had also been gilded a couple of times. It has been cut down to fit a smaller painting, the composition missing has been replaced, and it has been regilded.

19th Century Composition Frame

This very ornate Victorian frame is in good condition, considering how most antique frames suffer damage and losses, this example is in surprisingly whole condition.

Monday

Acorns, Oak Leaves, Acanthus Leaves...

Fancy Compo Corners

Another example of a large composition 19th Century frame, this one has a rebate size of 55" x 40" and would make a super mirror.

Wednesday

Antique Compo Ornament Frame

Tuesday

Swept Frame Ornament

A continental (probably French) swept Louis XV style frame, from the 19th Century. Many European frames have the ornament cast in a white plaster type composition, whereas English frames used a browny yellow composition. The composition on English antique frames develops numerous cracks over time, but the white plaster compo does not crack in the same way, a simple if very broad way to identify English composition frames.

Sunday

Spandrels and Arched Slips

A few examples of spandrels and arch-topped slips, with various ornament and decoration. Three example have composition ornament, the one above has a low relief floral design built up from gesso (pastiglia), and there is also a nice example of incised decoration which depicts a ship flying British flags.

Wednesday

Barbizon frame

This excellent example of a French 19th century Barbizon frame had various missing pieces of ornament, although thankfully the lovely antique gilded finish is original. The whole frame was treated with a consolidating adhesive which was introduced into all the cracks in and around the composition ornament, in order to stabilise and secure it to the substrate. The photo at the top shows the areas repaired and painted in red bole. Grey/black bole was applied over the red and then these areas were gilded and toned to match the original finish.

Thursday

Striped back

This antique 19th Century frame had lots of layers of over-painting and modern gilding. It has been stripped right back and will be re-gilded. It is a Victorian neoclassical profile with oak veneer flat.

Wednesday

Washline mounts and 19th C frames

These nice examples of washline mounts came into the workshop today, the antique frames with the mounts need some repair and restoration work.
