Cherepovets Art Museum

A selection of paintings and frames seen in Cherepovets Art Museum, in Russia. As is common with every museum I have ever visited in Russia, a mixture of fine original frames, hideous modern mass produced frames, and completely unsuitable frames. The stand out painting in this museum for me is by one of the greatest Russian painters; Ivan Shishkin's Edge of a Forest, which is sadly framed in a mass produced modern frame that would be OK for a print of the painting but not the original, for all I know the original frame maybe being restored and this is a temporary surround, but in my experience I doubt it. Still a nicely presented little art gallery.

Wooden Antique Frames

I love to see the great variation of frame designs, ornament, and surfaces. These are all examples of wooden antique frames; a birds eye maple veneer, carved hardwood cassetta frame, and a carved (lime?) Louis XIII style frame.

18th Century Carved Frame

A lovely little carved 18th Century frame, I call this style a Romney frame after the artist, it is an ideal period frame for drawings, sketches, or watercolours.

Restored Ornate Candelabra

This very ornate and fabulous looking 18th Century carved candle holder had numerous bits and pieces missing. It had also been overpainted so needed complete restoration.

Frame stock

I had a big delivery of frames arrive last week, a really good selection of antique, vintage repro, and modern reproduction frames. There were considerably more than advertised so it has taken a few days to sort through them and get them put away, and I have not started to catalogue them accurately yet. I will take a few photos of some of my favourites in a few days.
