Florentine Frame
A lovely example of a carved Italian Florentine style frame from the 19th Century, new stock that arrived today. The condition is rather good considering these frames are very prone to damage and losses to the carved wood. The rebate is about 20" x 16"

Two More Antique Frames
Detail of the bottom section of a composition oval frame, and a nice Louis XVI style moulding frame. Both with original gilding, great looking burnish on the hollow of the French frame.

Florentine frame
This lovely carved wood Italian frame, often called a Florentine frame, has come in for some repairs and a good tidy-up. They are clearly very prone to damage with all those scrolls and protruding leaf tips. This one is probably 19th Century. You also see them made from composition or plaster (instead of carved from wood) these versions are a nightmare to repair, the scrolls are supported on wire and as the compo cracks over time they just start falling apart.

Nearly finished...
The Florentine style frame Mark has been restoring and regilding is nearly finished... thankfully! Lots and lots of hours have gone into this so it will be good to get it finished this week, in other words we will be glad to see it leave the workshop! only joking, it is great to have such frames to work on. Here you can see photos after it has been lightly distressed and the leaf tips have been burnished. Next comes a bit of patina and toning.

Gilding...
Here you can see that Mark has been busy gilding the carved Florentine frame. The frame is being water gilded in 23.5ct gold leaf over red bole.

The antique Florentine frame has been sanded and the carved detail sharpened up, it has then been painted with yellow bole.

January jobs
I've been away from work for nearly all of January, and although I am back in England now, I have not really started work properly yet. Mark and Ian have been very busy at the workshop, and lots of new work has been coming in, which is good as January and February are often quiet months.
Here you can see a nice carved Florentine style frame which is being totally refinished, it is probably late 19th Century, it was in a bad state and had a pretty poor metal leaf (imitation gold) finish. The gesso is being sanded and the detail is being re-cut using metal tools. Next it will be painted in yellow and red bole.

This frame had some minor losses to the gesso, and has now been tidied up.

Carved Italian mirror frame
This carved Florentine style mirror frame was repaired last week, now I'm just waiting for the mirror glass to be delivered...

Frame repairs
The frame at the top fell off the wall and was badly damaged, with one section breaking away and about 8 large pieces breaking off. The 3 little frames (there are 4 all the same), have various areas of damage. The green stuff is a mould making silicone putty. The Florentine frame above has some gesso missing along the bottom edge, gaps in the corners and some small missing sections.
