Gilded and Painted Frames

A couple of gilded and painted frames that were made for flamingo paintings on canvas, by the artist Jeremy Houghton:

Carved Oak Frame

A nice example of a 19th Century carved oak Pre-Raphaelite type frame, with the gilding applied directly on the open wood grain.

Last stages on these frames

The next stage of these gilded and painted frames is to remove the tape masking the gilding, then wax and coloured pigments are brushed over the scoop section, adding various colours to the surface. Coloured wax is also brushed on the sides, which are also finished with paint and colourwashes. The three frames below have not yet had the gilding wiped clean:

The wax residue over the gilding is simply wiped off with white spirit. Sometimes sprayer sealer is also applied, for example when the leaf is silver or 12ct white gold. These are two finished frames:

Cut downs

I sold these two 20th Century frames this week and they have been cut down to fit smaller paintings. The top frame was made much smaller, it had some damage at most corners so it was easiest just to cut out the existing mitre joints and then cut the four lengths to size and then join as normal. With the second frame I left two corners joined and then made the cuts at two diagonally opposite corners, and then just had to join these back together.

Frame display

It has taken me over a year since moving in, but I have at last started putting some frames on display in the reception room! A selection of antique, period, reproduction, and recently made frames. I intend to cover every remaining bare patch of wall in frames, going through to the kitchen, and even in the toilet!
