Paint Finish

A simple finish on a gesso frame; sponged on red and black paint, then bronze powder is sponged on top. Distressed a little with an abrasive pad, a sealer coat of shellac, and then a wax/wash finish.

Painted Frame

This vintage frame from the mid 20th Century has been cut down to fit a smaller painting.

Here are a few of the stages involved in making this distressed paint finish frame.

Painting a Frame

This frame is just being painted on the middle section and sides. The gilding is burnished on the outer section but the inner part is not burnished. The gilding is masked off while I do the painting.

Tuesday

Small Scoop Frame

This little frame has moon gold gilding, with the inner section is painted with colour washes. It will next have some wax and pigments to add more colours and to give a distressed look to the paint finish.

Modern British

An example of a modern British water gilded and distressed paint frame, this one has incised details at the corners and centres, which you don't see very often and add a nice touch. This frame was made by a very long established London framemaker.

Flamingos by Jeremy Houghton

This gilded and painted frame was made for one of my regular artist clients; Jeremy Houghton, you can see lots more of his work on his website:

Paint texture

I mentioned in the last post about fine mess or netting being used on some antique frame styles, here is a contemporary version of this way of adding surface texture. This frame was made by another framer, I like this effect and will be trying something similar myself.

Before and after...

The same painting seen in two different framing styles. 'Before' is in the heavy and traditional fluted cove frame. 'After' is in the 22ct moon gold and painted frame.

Step frame

This frame was made by taking a flat moulding and then adding the raised step, this was made from some offcuts from another job, where I had to cut the back of a moulding. The frame was then gessoed, black bole was painted on just the top flat and it was water gilded in 22ct moon gold. The gilding was distressed lightly and then burnished. The inner and outer part of the frame were then painted in primer and a grey white before being aged with wax and rottenstone.
