A lovely little carved 18th Century frame, I call this style a Romney frame after the artist, it is an ideal period frame for drawings, sketches, or watercolours.

Recent Gilded Frames - Old and New
The top frames are water gilded in 12ct white gold on an ogee shaped profile. The bottom frame is an early 20th C frame that is being refinished in metal leaf and bronze powder.
Restored Ornate Candelabra
This very ornate and fabulous looking 18th Century carved candle holder had numerous bits and pieces missing. It had also been overpainted so needed complete restoration.
Black Gesso Frame
A frame with textured gesso that has a red base paint colour with black on top. The sight edge is dark gilt bronze powder.

Metal Leaf Swept
This vintage early 20th Century swept frame has been refinished, the process is pretty quick and simple. First a shellac (Zinsser BIN) primer coat is painted on, then a red/brown casein based paint, the high points are painted with acrylic gold size and metal leaf is put on all these areas. Next the remaining red areas are painted with a bronze powder paint, which is made from glue and bronze powder. The last stage is a pigmented button polish coat all over and then some wax.

Old Lap Joint Frames

Bright Frame Gilding
During a recent visit to Bristol Museum and Art Gallery I saw a number of 19th Century paintings in frames that had been regilded. These frames were left really bright, which is quite unusual to see. This is perhaps how they would have looked when they were originally made, but we are so used to seeing gilding aged and darkened by dust that they really stood out. It was good to see almost all paintings glazed with 'museum glass', unlike Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery which has only a few.

The Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology University of Oxford
The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford has a wonderful collection of European paintings and frames. I am particularly fond of cassetta frames, of which they have many lovely examples. The small guide book 'Frames and Framings - Ashmolean Guide Books' looks at 34 of the frames in the collection and is well worth getting if you like frames, and plan to visit the museum.
