18th Century frame cut down

This 18th C carved English Louis XIV style frame has been cut down some time in the past, (looks like it was done a long time ago) to fit a smaller painting. All four sides have had sections cut out to make the frame smaller. This has happened to a lot of antique frames, which are becoming harder to find in the right sizes, and large frames especially (ideal for cutting down!), are becoming more and more scarce.

Hogarth frames

Image 5. -  A modern Hogarth moulding

I have mentioned before about so called Hogarth mouldings, nowadays this seems to mean pretty much any black and gilt frame, associated with framing antique and period prints. Although the modern Hogarth frames bear very little resemblance to the original Hogarth frames which were really quite special, they were made from polished fruit wood with a sanded flat and carved border. Even the modern and 20th Century mass produced versions, which really look quite cheap and nasty (see photos 4. & 5.), started out as a pine frame with carving and ebonised finish (see 1. & 2.) and these versions look very good on antique prints. Lastly it is still possible to have hand made Hogarth frames made (image 3.) which are much more authentic then and pre-finished factory made frame.

Antique Neoclassical Frame

A simple Neoclassical style 19th Century frame, it has a good original gold leaf finish, which makes a change from the horrible over-painting often seen on antique frames.

An English 17th/18th C Carved Frame

A nice example of an English Louis XIII style carved frame from the 17th or 18th Century. I like this type of frame, with its simple, balanced carving and stamped circle pattern ground.

An American Cassetta Frame

An early 20th Century American version of an Italian cassetta frame, probably made by Newcomb Macklin Co.

Two French Antique Frames and a Vintage Artist's Frame

Examples of three French picture frames. Top is a 19th C Barbizon frame, middle a 19th C second Empire fluted neoclassical frame, and bottom is a mid 20th C Parisian frame known as a Montparnasse style. All of these are part of my new stock, and once catalogued they will be for sale.

Two Antique Swept Frame Repairs

Thursday

Black and gilt ripple moulding

This late 20th C ripple moulding frame was cut down from 20" x 16" to 14" x 16". Because of the gilt corners the frame was reduced in size by removing the unwanted sections around the middle of each long size. The back and rebate spacers were covered in hessian fabric and the canvas was float mounted on the backing.
